Alice worried lightly at the inside of her bottom lip with her teeth for a minute. Genuinely thinking it over, like it needed proper contemplating. Which these days, it rather did. “I don’t know how,” she finally admitted after a long silence, almost like a completely different train of conversation. She toyed absently with a strawberry she hadn’t sliced yet between two fingers on the cutting board. “I mean, hell, I know how, it’s just…hard to turn off, yeah?”

It felt like admitting defeat, somehow, but it was something that she needed to distinguish. “It’s not you,” Alice added, shooting him a wry smile. “In case you were thinking it’s you being a terrible host. I don’t know many people who’d offer up their shower.”

She moved around him to get at her mug of coffee, popping the strawberry into her mouth as she went. It felt like shaking off something heavy, and she wanted to stay closer to the lighthearted, friendly atmosphere they’d tentatively started to create instead. “Cutlery? I won’t go banging through your drawers unless strictly necessary.”

Henry watched her for a moment, as she explained. His eyes got that far-away look that anyone who had ever seen hell had. Like the past was attempting to make a return.

“….Yeah.” He muttered absently. Because he did know what it was like, to have those moments where he couldn’t shut off, infact they were more frequent than silence to his mind. What could you do when you were a man like Henry? Nothing. He shivered and glanced back to her, putting a smile on his features. “Well, I’ll just have to teach you…I’ve perfected the art of lazing about some.” It wasn’t entirely true but he did have a fairly easy-going personality on the surface. He wanted her to be able to relax, and that meant, he might have to.

“Silverware is on the far left, just before you round the corner to the dining room.”

“I’m your guest,” she said again, as if that explained anything. Explained away how she couldn’t shake the persona of being a constant employee and needing to stay busy because that was what she was getting paid to do. Explained that she didn’t know what idle hands were capable of and she didn’t want to find out. Explained how she was afraid that her hands only stayed steady because they were in constant motion, and if she stopped, just once, she’d lose that stoic control that kept her alive and safe.

She set out the different fruit in front of her and started slicing, quick and efficient. As far as Alice was concerned, a knife was a knife, whether in surgery or in the kitchen, and it felt like familiar movements. Grounded her a bit, combined with the sound and smell of the pancakes on the griddle, mixing together into a familiarity that she felt the passing whim of wanting to just let go and let herself fall into.

Instead, she piled sliced strawberries into a small mound in the corner of the cutting board. “Don’t worry,” she said after a few minutes. “I’ll make up for it later by graciously letting you do the washing up.” She glanced over at him with a bemused smile.

“Well, as my guest, you’re to relax, so try for it, yeah?” He knew the request was in vain, he could see the tension in her shoulders, the way they curled in towards her heart, as if at any moment she’d be threatened, or yelled at to work, or any other myriad of things she was used to.

He fell silent as his focus was taken by the pancakes, he would reach over periodically, plucking fruit as it was sliced from the board, avoiding her blade like it was second nature. Dropping the pieces onto cooking pancake batter, flipping them when needed. It was a simplistic thing. Making pancakes, and it almost felt strange in their lives, the violence and gore that they experienced made them too far removed from everyday life, and from small moments. From the safety of normality.

He smiled, watching his hands as the spatula took the round cakes from the griddle and plated them. “Alright, I think I can survive with that.
